Description
Chicago and Eastern Illinois Baldwin Atlantic type. Number 222 was evidently considered enough of a museum piece to be displayed by the C&EI at the Chicago Railroad Fair, where this photograph was taken. Unfortunately, it did not survive, in whole. The left side of the running gear is a display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, showing how the mechanical portion of a steam locomotive works. As of 2016, the remains of 222 have been acquired by and moved to the B&O Museum in Baltimore.
Inset shows same engine in service prior to remodeling for the fair.
